Intel introduces Xeon processors in Cascade Lake series

Intel has announced the Cascade Lake-generation Xeon processors. The top model of the new line has 48 cores and support for twelve memory channels per socket. There is also the new Xeon E-2100 line for entry-level servers.

The Cascade Lake processors will appear in the first half of 2019 and will be made at 14nm. The chips are intended for data-intensive tasks such as high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and infrastructure-as-a-service. This is a pre-announcement prior to the Supercomputing 2018 conference.

Intel does not provide many details about the new models, except that the most extensive models have 48 cores and there is support for twelve DDR4 memory channels per socket. Motherboards with two sockets for a total of 96 cores will be available, according to the presentation.

According to Anandtech, it is a multi-chip package to achieve 48 cores, where Intel uses its Ultra Path Interconnect to connect two dies. Why Intel is not yet using its more flexible and efficient embedded multi-die interconnect bridge, or emib, is unknown.

At the same time, Intel announces the Xeon E-2100. These are processors with up to six cores and twelve threads, intended for entry-level servers. There is support for up to 128GB DDR4 ECC 2666MHz memory and forty PCI-E 3.0 lanes.
