Global shipments of laptops and desktops rose slightly in the quarter, marking the first time in six years at the end of the year, IDC estimates. According to another research firm, Gartner, there was still a decline.

According to IDC, PC shipments grew 0.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017 to 70.6 million units. Over the whole year, the research bureau still calculates a drop of 0.2 percent, but IDC speaks of the most stable year since 2011. Business sales in particular picked up. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa, emea for short, the number of laptop deliveries increased. In China, it was mainly gaming PCs that increased demand. According to IDC, HP benefited the most with PC shipments growing more than 8 percent. At the number two and three, Lenovo and Dell, deliveries hardly changed compared to the end of 2016; at Asus, these fell sharply by 11 percent.

IDC’s competitor Gartner claims based on its market figures that worldwide PC shipments fell by 2 percent in the fourth quarter. However, this agency also reports a drop in deliveries in the US, but growth in Asia, Japan and Latin America. In the emea region the decline was ‘modest’. At Gartner, HP also remains in the lead, with a market share of 22.5 percent and delivery growth of 6.6 percent. The deliveries of Lenovo and Dell also remain virtually unchanged in this ranking and those of Asus also fall here by 11 percent.
