Honor, a subsidiary of Huawei, has presented its V8 smartphone in China. The device has a 5.7″ LCD with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels and is equipped with a Kirin 950-soc and two 12-megapixel cameras. There will also be a variant with a full-HD screen.

In terms of specifications, the Honor V8 shares similarities with the Huawei P9 Plus. However, the Honor is slightly larger and available in a higher resolution than the P9 Plus, which has a 5.5″ OLED screen with full HD resolution. However, there will also be an Honor V8 with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, at the same screen size of 5.7″.

The V8 contains 4GB of RAM and a Kirin 950-soc, which is made by Huawei itself. It is an octa-core processor with four A72 cores at 2.5GHz and four A53 cores at 1.8GHz. The model with qhd resolution has 64GB of storage space, the full-hd version has 32GB. The storage memory can be expanded with a micro SD memory card.

The Honor V8 has two 12-megapixel cameras with laser autofocus, probably with the same Sony IMX286 sensors as in the Huawei P9 devices, with pixels of 1.25 microns. In the promotional material, the manufacturer itself speaks of ‘1.76 micron equivalent’, Huawei does the same with the P9. With this, the manufacturer claims that a dual camera with small pixels is just as good as a single camera with larger pixels.

With the dual camera it is probably possible to obtain effects such as simulating depth of field. Such functionality was previously available on the Honor 6 Plus. The front camera has a resolution of eight megapixels.

The metal housing measures 157×77.6×7.75mm and weighs 170 grams. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back, the battery has a capacity of 3500mAh and supports fast charging via the USB-C connection. The device runs Android 6.0 with the EMUI shell.

Although Honor smartphones are also sold in the Benelux, the Honor V8 is only available in China for the time being. The device will be available there from 17 May. The variant with 64GB storage and 1440p resolution costs 2799 yuan. The 1080p model with 32GB costs 2299 yuan. Converted that is about 377 and 310 euros, excluding VAT and import costs. It is not yet known whether the device will come to Europe at a later date.
