Hackers have hacked into the non-confidential network in the White House, the seat of the US president. That reports The Washington Post. The US government confirms it has observed “suspicious activity” on the network.

The White House cannot confirm that these are Russian government hackers who allegedly broke into the network. The Washington Post writes that it is suspected that these are hackers who work on behalf of the Russian government. That newspaper says it is relying on several White House officials, who do not want to be named.

The hackers only got access to the non-confidential network in the White House. As a result, confidential, state secret information would not have been compromised. It is unclear whether any non-confidential information was taken; the NSA and FBI are still investigating the hack.

The network has been temporarily offline after the hack. Also, according to The Washington Post, the intranet and VPN service have been intermittently unavailable. In 2012, hackers also broke into the White House network. According to the US government, this also involved an attack on the unclassified network.
