Google to integrate Panoramio in Views

Google plans to eventually integrate Panoramio into Views, which will bring the photo service to an end after almost ten years. The company first wants to ensure that Views, a photo community within Maps, becomes more ‘mature’, after which photos are transferred to this new service.

Evan Rapoport, product manager at Google, said in a post on Google’s support forums that Panoramia will be phased out over time. The photo service will be merged into the recently released Views, which is part of Google Maps. With this, the internet giant hopes to create a central place where users can upload their photos with geolocation, which are then shown on the map service Maps.

Before integrating Panoramio with i Views, the latter needs to mature, says Rapoport. In the near future, Google will develop new features and fix problems, after which it wants to help users with the transition from Panoramio to Views.

Panoramio has been around since 2005 and was acquired by Google in 2007. However, the service proved unable to become very popular. With Views, Google hopes to get more users excited about sharing photos on Maps.
