Google releases app for creating 3D designs on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive

Google has released an app for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that should allow users to easily design objects in 3D and share them online. The app, Blocks, is available for free for both VR systems.

Google wants Blocks to feel more like playing with blocks like kids do than working with 3d design software. It is not yet possible to create complex environments with Blocks, so far it is only possible to create objects. Anyone who shares their creations can find them on a Google site. In addition, the objects can be saved and used in self-build apps for VR and augmented reality.

It is possible to create objects from shapes and color them in a 3d environment. The app is available immediately in the Oculus Store for the Rift and Steam for the HTC Vive. Blocks does not yet work on Google’s own VR systems Cardboard and Daydream. Presumably, Google is waiting for standalone headsets from Daydream to appear. They will be released at the end of this year and will cost around $800.
