Google introduces simplified two-step authentication

Google has introduced a new way of two-factor authentication for phones called Google prompt. The feature works on Android devices without adding any additional software. For iOS devices, the Google Search app must be installed.

With Google prompt enabled, it is possible to log in to Google apps by clicking a confirmation on a smartphone without having to enter any codes. Until now, two-step authentication on Google services was possible by receiving an SMS containing a security code, after which the code had to be entered in the relevant service.

There is also the option of using the Google Authenticator app or a physical security key. In some cases, Google Prompt makes it easier to log in because you only have to click on ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on the smartphone.

At the moment it is not possible to use both a security key and Google Prompt. Also, the phone must be connected to a data connection for the system to function otherwise. SMS only requires a mobile phone connection and Authenticator works without a connection.

Android users must update to the latest version of Google Play Services and iOS users must install the latest version of the Google search app. Installation works via My Account in the Google Dashboard, then ‘Sign in to Google’, then ‘Two-step authentication’ and then ‘Set up an alternative second step’.
