Google will offer support in the Google Home app for the first generation of Nest Cam Indoor security cameras, which were released in 2015. These devices should be manageable within the next few weeks in the Public Preview version of the smart home app.

To set up, manage and control the first Google Nest Indoor remotely, users previously had to use the Nest app. However, now it has to be done it will be possible to transfer the first generation security camera from the Nest to the Google Home app, if the Public Preview version of the latter is used. A pop-up should appear with which the camera can be transferred. Google warns that it may take several weeks before every Public Preview user with an eight-year-old camera sees the pop-up. It is not known when this option will become available to all users.

The Home app serves as a replacement for the Nest app. New Nest devices can only be used with the Home app, but many older Google smart home products can only be operated via the Nest app for the time being. Company promised earlier that all Nest devices should ultimately be controllable via the Home app, including products such as smoke detectors and thermostats. However, it is still unclear exactly when this should happen. After the Nest Indoor has been transferred for all users, the Nest Outdoor will be next, according to Google.

Once users have transferred their camera to Home, it is no longer possible to operate it via the Google Nest app. However, users can still undo the transfer. For the time being, the Google Nest app will remain usable, Google said.

In addition, the tech giant writes that it should become possible ‘later this year’ to manually create clips from Nest Cam images in the Home app. The cut images can then be downloaded. This function was already available in the Nest app, but in the Google Home app it is currently only possible to automatically create clips from the camera recordings.
