Google is giving its Assistant software a machine learning function to generate an alarm clock sound that is adapted to conditions such as the weather and the user’s schedule. For now, the feature only works on Lenovo’s Smart Clock.

According to Google, if users choose the Impromptu alarm, they will wake up with an alarm that is adapted to the situation. The time of day, the weather and the agenda are things that are looked at. Google says the feature uses machine learning from the Magenta project, which is a research project that uses machine learning in creative processes.

Google also links to an example of an alarm that would be played in the morning at a temperature of less than 10 degrees Celsius. The search giant does not demonstrate other examples of custom alarm clock sounds. According to the description, it is in all cases about piano tunes.

According to Google, the feature will be released for the Lenovo Smart Clock via a software update on Tuesday. That device is a kind of Google Home or Nest Mini with a screen that shows the weather and the time. It is not yet known when the feature will come to other Google Assistant devices.
