Google Docs, Slides and Sheets get support for directly editing Office files such as .docx and .xlsx. Google has announced that. Now users need to convert files before they can edit them.

The feature will be available in G Suite for business customers, Google says. In a statement to The Verge, the search giant says that consumers can also use the function with Google Docs, Slides and Sheets.

Users can open, edit and collaborate files without the need for conversion to a proprietary Google format, as is now necessary. The move should make it easier for people to open files from Microsoft Office, for example if employees from other companies or other departments work with Microsoft’s office suite.

If users open Office files from before Office 2007, Google will automatically convert them to a newer format, the search giant says. Business customers will get support for editing Office documents starting next month. This will happen for consumers from this month.
