Google is going to take over Fitbit, the company confirms after rumors about this earlier this week. Google wants to bring more Made by Google wearables to the market with Fitbit in the ranks.

Google has signed an agreement with Fitbit about the acquisition, according to Google and Fitbit. Google pays 2.1 billion dollars, converted 1.88 billion euros, for the maker of fitness trackers. The acquisition is expected to be completed in 2020.

Fitbit was founded in 2012 and now has 28 million active users, while a total of more than 100 million wearables have been sold. The company hopes to be able to provide more innovation in the wearables market as part of Google.

Google is making the acquisition because it wants to invest more in its Wear OS and bring more Made by Google wearables to market. The company has been trying to expand its position in the wearable market for years, with mixed success.

The Fitbit app will remain available on both Android and iOS, and Google promises not to use user health data for advertising. The company also reports that Fitbit users will have the option to view, move or delete their collected data.

On Monday, it was rumored that Google’s parent company Alphabet had made a takeover offer for Fitbit. The wearable maker is now becoming a Google division, just like Nest, for example.
