Gartner: turnover in the chip market fell 11 percent, Intel is again the largest producer

Intel is again the largest chip manufacturer in the world, at least in terms of turnover. The company achieved a turnover of $48.667 billion last year, pushing Samsung out of the top spot. That company had a turnover of just under forty billion dollars.

Intel thus takes back first place from Samsung, which turned out to be the largest chip manufacturer in 2022. It shows from figures from analyst firm Gartner. That means the chip market was worth $533 billion in 2023, a decline of 11.1 percent compared to 2022. Global revenue that year was $583.5 billion. Samsung was the largest manufacturer that year, but the turnover of both companies fell sharply. Samsung’s dropped from $63.8 billion to $39.9 billion in 2023, making the company smaller than Intel; that had a turnover of $58.4 billion in 2022 and $48.6 billion in 2023.

Samsung suffered mainly from the decline in memory production, in which the company is traditionally much larger. Memory production turnover decreased by 37 percent worldwide. Manufacturers said they were already scaling back their memory production last year as prices began to fall sharply. In addition to Samsung, SK hynix, for example, also suffered from this; that company’s turnover fell by 32 percent.

Qualcomm and Broadcomm follow Intel and Samsung as the largest companies; they achieved turnovers of 29 and 25.5 billion dollars. Nvidia makes the biggest increase in Gartner’s analysis. That company is the fifth largest chip producer and achieved a turnover of $ 23.9 billion in that branch in 2023, a growth of 56.4 percent compared to last year. Gartner attributes this growth entirely to the increasing growth in artificial intelligence. Last year it was announced that Nvidia reached a stock market value of more than a trillion dollars. Also striking is the increase of STMicroelectronics, which is a lot more modest than that of Nvidia. The European manufacturer had a turnover increase of 7.7 percent.
