TrendForce: PCs must have at least 16GB of memory for AI applications

Microsoft will require that ‘AI PCs’ have at least 16GB of RAM. This is written by TrendForce, which says that neural processing units in such PCs must also be able to achieve 40 tera operations per second.

TrendForce writes in an analysis that Microsoft has set these as minimum system requirements for dram in what it calls ‘AI PCs’. These are computers with their own neural processing units, for example, on which an assistant such as CoPilot can run in the future. Microsoft wants to release Windows versions with Copilot integration in the future, but certain minimum system requirements apply. One of them will be a minimum of 16GB of ram. Windows 11 currently only requires 4GB of memory. It is not known what TrendForce bases its information on, but there have been rumors for some time that the system requirements for AI applications in Windows are increasing.

According to TrendForce, Microsoft will also impose stricter requirements on CPUs. They must be able to achieve at least 40Tops, or tera operations per second. The Snapdragon It is not clear whether this means that hardware without those CPUs can use AI applications such as CoPilot. After all, Microsoft is heavily committed to such applications, which makes it illogical that it would only make such features available for the very latest systems.
