Frontier stops further development console version Elite Dangerous
Frontier has stopped developing the console version of the Elite Dangerous space simulator. The game will remain playable and will receive “critical updates” but no new content will be coming to the console version. The postponed Odyssey expansion is therefore cancelled.
Frontier has struggled for the past few months with the question of how to proceed. “It is with a heavy heart that it has been decided to cancel all console developments,” the developer wrote. Frontier wants to focus on the further development of the story and wants to focus on one codebase.
The PC version of Elite Dangerous got the big Odyssey expansion in May last year, but there were a lot of issues with that. Frontier then postponed the console version of the update to allow time to fix the issues with the PC version.
So far, the Odyssey update has not appeared for consoles. As a result, the developer has been working with two codebases in recent months: the pre- and post-Odyssey codebase, as the company calls it.
The console version of Elite Dangerous will continue to work, but will no longer receive new content. However, Frontier says that the game will receive essential updates. In terms of new content, the developer is now fully focused on the PC with the post-Odyssey codebase.
