The fork of Popcorn Time, which is being developed by the Time4Popcorn team, has released an Android version. Popcorn Time makes it easy to watch streaming video content from illegal sources, a reason for Hollywood to chase after the creators.

Shortly after the original Popcorn Time application came out, the creators decided to back off. They would have been put under pressure from the film industry. However, the code, in which films can be watched via bittorrent streaming, was open source and a number of developers took up the gauntlet. The most successful to date is Time4Popcorn: the desktop version of Popcorn Time is now available for Windows, Linux and OS X.

The developers released a first version for Google’s mobile operating system Android this week. This makes the Popcorn Time app available to many smartphone and tablet users. It is still a beta version, but the application appears to work well. The source code is available on GitHub.

The accessible effect of Popcorn Time and the current range of films, mostly in HD quality, are a thorn in Hollywood’s side. The anger among copyright holders may be even greater now that the desktop application also offers access to recent television series. Soon there should also be a version that can run on Windows XP.
