Firmware update: Apple iOS 14.2

Apple has version 14.2 of iOS released. From version 13, iOS is only suitable for the iPhone and the iPads have been given their own OS, with the main difference being the extra possibilities to use the larger screen. Apple makes several changes to the interface of iPhones with iOS 14. For example, users can place widgets on home screens and Apple adds an alphabetical list to pages full of apps that will form the right-most home screen. Furthermore, users can choose a different browser and mail app as default instead of Safari and Mail. In iOS 14.2, Apple makes the following improvements:

iOS 14.2 includes the following improvements for your iPhone:

  • Over 100 new emojis, including animals, food, faces, household objects, musical instruments, gender-inclusive emojis and more
  • Eight new backgrounds for both light and dark modes
  • The magnifying glass can detect nearby people and report their distance using the LiDAR sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • Support for iPhone 12 leather case with MagSafe
  • Optimized charging for AirPods to reduce battery aging by reducing the time your AirPods are fully charged
  • Headphone sound level notifications to warn you when the sound level may affect your hearing
  • New AirPlay controls for streaming content throughout your home
  • Intercom support for HomePod and HomePod mini with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and CarPlay
  • Ability to connect the HomePod to the Apple TV 4K for stereo, surround sound and Dolby Atmos audio
  • Option to provide statistics on exposure reports to participating public health authorities, while protecting your identity

This version also fixes the following issues:

  • Apps could be out of order in the dock on the Home screen
  • Viewfinder could be black when Camera was started
  • Lock screen keyboard could miss touches when trying to enter passcode
  • Reminders could be set to past times by default
  • There may be no content showing in the Photos widget
  • The Weather widget could display the maximum temperature in Celsius when the unit was set to Fahrenheit
  • The precipitation chart description for the next hour in Weather may have incorrectly indicated when the precipitation would stop
  • Voice recordings were interrupted by incoming calls
  • The screen could be black when playing Netflix videos
  • The Apple Watch app could close unexpectedly when opened
  • For some users, GPS routes or workout health data was not syncing between Apple Watch and iPhone
  • The CarPlay dashboard could incorrectly show ‘Not playing’ when playing audio audio
  • Wireless charging of devices could be prevented
  • Exposure notifications were disabled when you restored iPhone from iCloud backup or when you copied data to a new iPhone using iPhone migration
