The fine for using a smartphone while cycling will be 95 euros. The AD writes this on the basis of sources in The Hague. The ban will come into effect on 1 July, from then on it is forbidden to hold a mobile electrical device while cycling.

The amount of 95 euros would be aligned with other fines that cyclists can receive. Cyclists can also be fined 95 euros for driving through a red light and overtaking on the right. According to the AD, the new traffic fine will be discussed in the weekly Council of Ministers on Friday.

The ban will come into effect on July 1. The new law prohibits holding a mobile electronic device while driving all vehicles. This broad term is used to take into account the future.

The ban has been in force for motor vehicles since 2002 and also for light moped riders since 2009. With effect from the new law, the ban will also apply to cyclists, tram drivers and drivers of disabled vehicles without an engine.
