Female Developer Talks Sexism and Harassment on GitHub

A well-known female developer claims that the GitHub development platform has a sexist and intimidating culture. According to Julie Ann Horvath, she was not taken seriously during her work and there was an intimidating atmosphere.

Horvath himself already announced his departure from Github, but gave few details about the exact reason. However, she told TechCrunch that she was systematically intimidated during her work and that there is a negative attitude within the organization towards female employees.

Formerly a familiar face on GitHub, Horvath said her opinion was not taken seriously by the otherwise predominantly male developers. The situation later escalated as the founder and his wife allegedly behaved intimidating repeatedly. Horvath’s partner is also said to have been intimidated, but is still working at GitHub. Despite the human resources department being aware of the situation, little changed, Horvath said.

By telling her story at TechCrunch, Horvath states that she wants to defend herself against accusations from former colleagues. GitHub itself has not yet commented on the situation, but says it is investigating the incident.
