Eztv stops after ‘enemy takeovers’ of domain names
Eztv, a popular site that distributed TV shows via bittorrent, has ceased operations. According to an administrator, this was decided after unknowns got their hands on various domain names from Eztv and possibly also cracked the torrent site.
TorrentFreak spoke to some of Eztv’s administrators. They say that unknown persons initially got their hands on eztv.it at the beginning of this year after the domain name was suspended by registrar NIC.it and was put back on the market. The administrators switched to eztv.ch, while the domain name hijacker repurposed torrents published on eztv.ch through a reversed proxy. The domain name hijacker proposed an agreement with the administrators of Eztv, but they declined. Eztv also unsuccessfully attempted to block Novaking’s eztv.it proxy feature.
The domain name hijackers later also managed to get their hands on eztv.se. The fear arose that they might have gotten their hands on login details, after which the Eztv administrators decided to close the site for months while a security audit was conducted. Eventually, eztv.ch also came into the hands of the domain name hijackers.
After all the setbacks, the administrators of Eztv, one of the most popular sites in the torrent scene, have decided to shut down after ten years. They argue that the “fun” in distributing torrents of popular TV content has been spoiled by the activities of the domain name hijackers. Also emphasize that they never conducted their activities for profit. Several other torrent sites now block accounts of users posing as Eztv.
