Edge 92 Gets Automatic Https Feature That Forces Encrypted Connections

The new version of Edge will have a feature to automatically switch from an unsecured HTTP to an HTTPS connection. This is a test in a preview version of the browser.

The feature is called Automatic Https and is similar to plugins like Https Everywhere. Microsoft says the feature will come in a preview version of Edge 92. Testers in the Canary and Developer channels can enable the feature by turning on the flag edge://flags/#edge-automatic-https. The feature can then be turned on and off with a toggle.

Microsoft distinguishes between two types of websites. Automatic Https can be used on all http websites, but also only on websites that ‘probably support https’. That last category is the default, Microsoft says. These are websites that offer an https connection, but are configured incorrectly and therefore do not offer. Through that category, Microsoft says that users will not experience connection problems with websites they want to visit. The company itself maintains a list of sites that are so misconfigured.
