Driver Update: ATi Linux Driver 8.18.8

ATi has released a new set of drivers for the Linux platform, giving it 8.18.8 as the version number. Since the drivers are released as closed source, there are six different RPMs available for both Linux x86 and Linux x86_64 with XFree86 or X.Org. Unfortunately, ATi has been using the services that Akamai offers for hosting files for some time, which means that it is no longer possible to link directly to the downloads. We therefore pumped the drivers to our file server. The included release notes show us the following:

Issue Resolved:

This section provides information on issues that have been resolved with the latest release of the ATI Proprietary Linux driver. This includes the following:

• The ATI Linux software driver installer now correctly identifies the XFree86 4.3.99 X server. Resolving an issue with the software driver failing to install
• Access to /proc/dri/0/* no longer results in an oops on kernels that have CONFIG_REGPARM enabled

Known issues:

The following section provides a brief description of known issues associated with the latest version of ATI Proprietary Linux driver. These issues include:

• Attempting to install the driver on distributions that have updated certain 3D components outside of the stock XOrg 6.8.2 may result in the driver not initializing 3D applications properly. Further details can be found in topic number 737-20868
