A designer who was employed by the now bankrupt smartphone maker Essential has shown what the manufacturer’s next smartphones would have looked like. The PH-2 had been an evolution from the PH-1, but the PH-3 should have become a budget model.

According to Kevin Hoffman, who has now put his blog post behind a password, the PH-3 should have become a phone with relatively cheap parts, including an OLED screen with already established size and resolution. On the back is a camera island with space for three lenses and a flash. Hoffman says he has been working on the smartphone since September 2019. The smartphone maker shut down last month.

The PH-2 was in development from the release of the PH-1 in 2017 and builds on that phone’s design. The second version had, among other things, added water and dust resistance to the case and made the bezel slightly rounder, 9to5Google writes. The phone is said to have been close to release when the company started focusing on making the smart speaker.

Essential was a phone manufacturer led by Android founder Andy Rubin. The manufacturer only released one product, the PH-1 in 2017. It had plans for a smart speaker. In addition, the company was working on a long and thin smartphone that would rely on voice control, the GEM.
