The LinuxWorld Conference & Expo will take place in San Francisco next week and one of the events that will be… take place, is the presentation of the Debian Common Core Alliance (DCCA). This partnership consists of credativ GmbH, Knoppix, LinEx, Linspire, MEPIS LLC, Progeny Linux Systems, Sun Wah Linux, UserLinux and Xandros. These companies will jointly develop the Debian Common Core (DCC). The intention of the DCC is to set up standard software packages on which a new distribution can be based and which can be used to certify against as a software developer or hardware producer. DCC, like Debian Sarge, will be based on Linux Standard Base 3.0. A number of DCCA participants had hoped that the partnership would yield more, such as one standard server distribution, as was the intention of the defunct UnitedLinux. It is striking that the Ubuntu Foundation is not a member of the DCCA. Debian has been criticized a lot from Ubuntu and it would therefore be logical if one would also help to get rid of the criticisms and improve Debian together in this way.
