Crucial has released a new series of 2.5″ SATA SSDs. The BX300 models again use mlc-nand, as opposed to the BX200 and MX300 series, which contain tlc-nand. There will be variants of 120 , 240 and 480 GB.

The Crucal BX300 SSDs contain 32-layer 256Gbit-3d-mlc-nand from parent company Micron. MLC memory has a longer lifespan than TLC and is also faster. Furthermore, Crucial uses a Silicon Motion SM2258 controller with dram. The SSDs also contain slc-nand as a cache. Unlike the MX300 SSDs, the BX300 models, like their predecessors, offer no encryption.

AnandTech has published a review of the 480GB variant and concludes that a big step has been taken in performance over the BX200 models, thanks to the switch from tlc to mlc-nand. Even with heavy workloads and when the SSD is almost full, it continues to perform well.

Crucial sells the BX300 SSDs in its own webshop and through Amazon. Later, the SSDs will also appear at other stores. The 120GB model costs about 62 euros, the 240GB variant has a price of more than 94 euros and the 480GB version costs about 157 euros.
