Codemasters Cheshire, the studio that created DiRT 5, is merging with Criterion Games. The studios will remain in their current locations, but together form a development studio to work on ‘the future of Need for Speed’.

In recent months, the two studios have already worked closely together, reports Codemasters on Twitter. This now results in a merger. There will be no move, but the two different studios will henceforth be seen as one Criterion studio with two locations. Former Codemasters Cheshire will work with Criterion Games on future Need for Speed games. Concrete details about new games in the arcade racer series have not been disclosed.

Codemasters was acquired by publisher Electronic Arts last year. Codemasters Cheshire is part of that. The studio created DiRT 5 and Onrush. In fact, the studio is made up of employees of the former Evolution Studios. That studio was responsible for Driveclub and Motorstorm, but was closed by Sony in 2016. Criterion Games has been part of EA since 2004. The studio is known for the Burnout games and has made three Need for Speed games between 2010 and 2013: Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted and Rivals.
