Cisco is acquiring cloud security firm CloudLock for $293 million, which is now about 265 million euros. CloudLock is a so-called cloud access security broker, which ensures security between cloud services of companies and their own infrastructure.

As a casb, CloudLock takes care of the traffic between the local IT infrastructure of companies and the information that is processed by ‘cloud services’. The importance of a casb consists of being able to provide extensive information about the use of cloud applications via different platforms and being able to detect unauthorized use. For example, CloudLock can support organizations in transferring documents to services such as Google Docs or Microsoft Office 365.

Cisco sees CloudLock as a valuable addition to its portfolio as more and more companies move to externally deployed network services instead of locally managed infrastructure. The CloudLock team will be merged with Cisco’s Networking and Security Business Group. The aim is to complete the acquisition in the first quarter of 2017.
