The Chinese company Byton has shown a concept version of an electric SUV at CES. It must have a range of 520 kilometers. Although it is a self-driving concept car, Byton wants to release a European model in 2020.

The striking thing about the car is the large screen, which serves as a dashboard and measures 125x25cm according to the manufacturer. In addition, there are three other screens in the interior. There are various control and interaction options, for example in the form of voice recognition, touch and hand gesture control, and biometric identification. As with many other devices at the CES fair, integration with Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa is built in here too.

Opening the car is possible via facial recognition. The car can recognize the driver and passengers and can already put the seats in the correct position. According to the manufacturer, equipment is available that supports communication via 5G. For example, a hidden antenna on the roof must be suitable for data transfer of up to 10 Gbit/s. The car should be able to drive independently for the most part in 2020 via level 4 autonomy. That functionality must be brought to models through a software update that are already driving around in China.

There are two models, one with a 71kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, and the other with a 95kWh battery and all-wheel drive. The latter model has a claimed range of 520km compared to the 400km of the aforementioned model. Priced at $45,000, the company plans to release a sedan and MPV in the future. The company’s CEO and co-founder is Carsten Breitfeld, who became head of BMW’s i8 program in 2010.
