Borderlands 3 is getting crossplay, but not with PlayStation consoles

Borderlands 3 will receive crossplay support with the exception of PlayStation consoles. The developer has an update ready that will allow crossplay on all platforms, but PlayStation support should be removed from the publisher.

Randy Pitchford, the top executive of Borderlands developer Gearbox, says on Twitter that support for crossplay on PlayStation consoles should be removed from the update at the publisher’s discretion. A reason for this is not given.

Earlier this month, the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple revealed that Sony is claiming a share of the revenue if players play cross-play games primarily on a PlayStation console. Borderlands publisher 2K Games may not want to make such agreements with Sony.

Sony rules for cross-play games

Players can purchase skins for vehicles and weapons in Borderlands 3. Sony receives a 30 percent commission on all expenditures made through PlayStation consoles. With the cross-platform revenue share rules that Sony has come up with, the company would get a share of the revenue if players mainly play on their PlayStation but spend the spend on another platform.

Borderlands 3 is available on PCs, Xbox and PlayStation consoles and on Google Stadia. Crossplay between the Xbox, PC and Stadia versions will soon be possible. It is not yet known when the required update will appear.
