Beeper Mini is operational again. This is reported by the company behind the iMessage client for Android. Beeper Mini users now need to use an Apple ID to use iMessage. Previously, a telephone number was sufficient.

According to the developers For the time being, iMessage messages will be sent via the user’s Apple ID and the service will no longer work with just a phone number. That was the case before. Beeper says it wants to bring this feature back and is working on a fix. It is not clear when that fix will be available.

Beeper Mini is now also free to use. Until recently, the chat app cost $2 per month, but Beeper is now moving away from that. The company first wants to be sure of a stable service and may subsequently opt for a subscription formula for users again.

Beeper Mini was in the news at the beginning of this month because it had developed an iMessage client for Android that works without an Apple ID. The app’s developers had researched and reverse engineered the iMessage stack, allowing the service to communicate directly with Apple’s servers. Three days after the release of Beeper Mini, the service stopped working. Apple had taken action against the service to ‘protect’ its iMessage users and would continue to release such updates in the future.
