The developers of BF3: Reality Mod announce the release of the mod for July 17. The complete conversion of Battlefield 3 into a modern tactical shooter was seven years in development and takes its inspiration from the influential Project Reality: BF2 mod.

BF3: Reality Mod focuses on completely overhauling the gameplay of the 2011 base game as an overhaul. release trailer can be seen, among other things, the improved graphic quality of the game, as well as the tactical approach of the modification. The developer, a team of ‘more than 80 contributors’, wants to bring a much more realistic experience with improved looks, textures, effects and a very short ‘time to kill’. Also, the emphasis in Reality Mod is more on collaboration and communication.

There are some requirements for the mod, which only works with the official version of Battlefield 3 including all DLC via Origin and Steam. For example, only “established communities can sign up for a license,” again underscoring how the project targets players interested in the more serious tone of BF3: Reality Mod. Via the official Discord server of the mod, groups can apply for a license.

In addition, modplatform Venice Unleashed required for the mod to play. This is a mod framework that is required to run basically any mod for Battlefield 3, as DICE’s game has no mod support by default. One of the features of VU is the ability to host custom servers, which allows BF3: Reality Mod to play with more than 100 players on one server.

BF3: Reality Mod is heavily based on Project Reality: BF2, a similar realistic overhaul of Battlefield 2. The creators of that mod later joined forces under the studio Offworld Industries, which is responsible for the BF2 mod’s spiritual successor, Squad . This successful multiplayer shooter, like the mentioned mods, focuses specifically on the realistic depiction of modern conflict, where individual players are only a small part of a huge battle.
