‘Apple will switch all products from Lightning to USB-C in two years’

Apple is expected to complete the transition from Lightning to USB-C in two years. That’s what Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman claims. The AirPods, AirPods Max, Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard, among others, now still have Lightning ports.

The first products to get a USB-C version are our own mice and keyboards, claims Gurman. That will happen from next month. AirPods and AirPods Max headphones will soon follow. Eventually there will probably also be versions of the MagSafe Duo and MagSafe Battery Pack with USB-C, but they will follow much later.

Last week, Apple announced the iPhone 15s with USB-C, bringing all smartphones to the universal charging port. This had to be done from next year according to EU rules. There was also a new version of the AirPods Pro with USB-C. That version is the only one that will be compatible with the upcoming Vision Pro VR headset. Apple has tested this internally with the Lightning version of the AirPods Pro, but for now only the USB-C variant is compatible. Both sets of earplugs are virtually identical.

Apple has been releasing products with USB-C for years. It arrived in 2015 with the MacBook 12″, which only had USB-C on board and no other ports. Other MacBooks and later also iPads also have USB-C.
