Apple has released macOS 14 Sonoma. The operating system has been available as a beta for some time, but is now generally available. The OS includes interactive widgets on the desktop, pinnable websites in the Dock, profiles in Safari and a new game mode.

Users of the operating system can download macOS 14, which Apple calls Sonoma, from the Software Update menu in their settings. The OS is not suitable for all Mac devices, but at least for the following:

System Oldest CPU generation
iMac 2019 and newer Intel Core 8000/9000
iMac Pro 2017 and newer Intel Xeon W2000
MacBook Air 2018 and newer Intel Core 8000
MacBook Pro 2018 and newer Intel Core 8000
Mac Pro 2019 and newer Intel Xeon W3000
Mac Studio 2022 and newer Apple M1
Mac mini 2018 and newer Intel Core 8000

The new operating system mainly contains some new features, but no major visual changes. The changes are included in Safari. The browser makes it possible, among other things, to pin websites to the Dock and to lock private windows with a password or fingerprint. It is also possible to add separate profiles in the browser. macOS Sonoma also adds a game mode. This allows games with a higher priority to use the CPU and GPU for better performance.

In terms of UX, there are some minor changes to the operating system. There are more options to blur images in the webcam and users can add ‘camera reactions’ based on the emotion a user shows on the webcam. A more interesting addition is that of widgets on the desktop. These were previously available in macOS versions in the notification center, but can now be seen larger on the desktop. Finally, users have more options in their screensavers, which can be personalized with new categories and options, for example.

Apple announced macOS 14 Sonoma earlier this year during the WWDC developer conference. We already wrote a preview of it at the time.
