The American e-mail provider VFEmail has lost all e-mails due to a digital burglar. The digital infrastructure and all backups have been removed. It is not clear why all the emails have been deleted, the owner says that no ransom has been demanded.

The owner caught the intruder formatting the backup server, writes the owner on Twitter. “At this point, the attacker has formatted all drives on every server,” he said in his tweet. “Every virtual machine, file and backup server has been wiped.” Only the server that the intruder was just formatting could still be saved, it is unknown how much data was on it.

on his personal Twitter account share owner Rick Romero more details. For example, he writes that there were different passwords and security measures and it is an advanced attack. He doesn’t know who is behind the attack. The attacker’s IP address comes from a Bulgarian hosting company.

According to Romero, this is probably the end of the mail service. Mailboxes are now back online, but all messages and filters have been lost. Focusing on privacy and security, VFEmail started in 2001 after the ILoveYou virus, after which it combined antivirus systems with an email client. Creating an account is free, but there are also paid plans with extras such as more bandwidth and storage.
