AMD has released four new Ryzen processors in the 7040U series, a CPU for laptops that runs on the Zen 4 architecture. The heaviest of those SoCs has eight cores and sixteen threads, and the CPUs contain integrated Radeon 700M GPUs.

AMD is releasing a Ryzen 3, two Ryzen 5s, and a Ryzen 7 in its 7040U series for laptops. The four CPUs are based on the Zen 4 architecture and all have a TDP of 15 to 30W. The Ryzen 3 7440U is the least powerful model of the series. It has four cores and eight threads with a base clock of 3GHz and a turbo frequency of 4.7GHz.

The two Ryzen 5s are the 7540U and 7640U. They both have six cores and twelve threads. The only difference is in the base clock speed. This is 3.2GHz for one model and 3.5GHz for the other. The turbo clock speed is the same at 4.9GHz. Both chips have a total of 22MB L3 cache memory. The highest ranked of the SoCs is the Ryzen 7 7840U, which is the fastest with eight cores and sixteen threads and has a boost clock of 5.1GHz. The base clock speed of 3.3GHz is slightly lower than that of the Ryzen 5, but the amount of cache is slightly larger at 24MB.

The four models have an integrated Radeon 700M GPU, but it differs per model. The Ryzen 3 has a 740M with four compute units with a maximum speed of 2.5GHz. The Ryzen 5 is also available with that, but can also be supplied with the Radeon 760M, which has eight CUs and reaches 2.6GHz. The Ryzen 7 has a Radeon 780M with twelve CUs and a maximum speed of 2.7GHz. The Radeon 700M line is a new line of integrated GPUs based on the RDNA3 architecture, which is also used in the Radeon RX 7000 desktop graphics cards.

The processors also have a Ryzen AI Engine on board. This is an FPGA that is based on the XDNA architecture and was developed based on technology from Xilinx. This AI engine can perform specific calculation tasks, but the company does not say what the speeds are in that area.

AMD previously released laptop processors based on the Zen 4 architecture. These were, for example, higher positioned Ryzen 7040HS processors with higher TDPs. The company also previously introduced its Ryzen 7045HX series. These were laptop processors based on the Ryzen 7000 desktop processors and come with up to sixteen cores.
