AMD Introduces Ryzen 9 3900 and Ryzen 5 3500X CPUs for OEMs

AMD comes with two new Ryzen CPUs. The Ryzen 9 3900 has 12 cores and 24 threads, and the Ryzen 5 3500X has 6 cores and 6 threads. The 3900 is available worldwide through system manufacturers, while the 3500X is only released through Chinese OEMs.

Tom’s Hardware website mentions that the Ryzen 9 3900 is clocked at 3.1GHz with a maximum turbo frequency of 4.3GHz, while the 3900X clocks at 3.8GHz with turboclocks at 4.6GHz. The new Ryzen 9 3900 also has a TDP of 65W, while the more expensive 3900X has a TDP of 105W. Other than that, the specifications seem identical, with a total of 70MB cache and support for pci-e 4.0.

It is expected that users with a Ryzen 9 3900 can achieve about the same performance as a 3900X by overclocking their CPU. This is usually the case with Ryzen CPUs. For example, on HWBot, the average Ryzen 5 3600 overclock is only 100MHz lower than the average 3600X overclock.

There have been rumors for some time that AMD will come with a cheaper 12-core CPU. The rumors seemed confirmed after Tom’s Hardware put a test with the CPU online. The website also broke the Cinebench R15 world record with a Ryzen 9 3900 that was nitrogen cooled to reach clock speeds of nearly 5.5GHz. Now it appears that the Ryzen 9 3900 is only available for OEMs for the time being. AMD also recently released a Ryzen 9 3900 Pro. This CPU has almost the same specifications as the ‘regular’ Ryzen 9 3900, but adds extra security features for companies, among other things.

AMD is also coming with the Ryzen 5 3500X. This CPU has six cores without support for simultaneous multithreading. For now, the CPU is only available to OEMs in China, but it is possible that the 3500X will also be made available to Western manufacturers in the future. The 3500X has a clock speed of 3.6GHz with a boost clock of 4.1GHz. The CPU has a TDP of 65W and 35MB cache memory.

The 3500X has been expected for some time. The chip already appeared in a Chinese webshop last month. According to the webshop, the 3500X had 6 cores and 6 threads. This now turns out to be true.

Some websites indicate that the 3500X has 6 cores and 12 threads. An AMD spokesperson says that he has not yet received explicit information from AMD Europe about this, but that this does not appear to be the case. For the time being, we therefore assume that the 3500X has 6 cores and 6 threads.

According to AMD, the Ryzen 9 3900 is now available worldwide for system manufacturers. The 3500X is available for Chinese OEMs as of today. Both CPUs are not yet available on AMD’s website. Since these are OEM models, the CPUs have no suggested retail prices.
