AMD discontinues Ryzen Threadripper processors aimed at consumers

AMD is simplifying the range of its Ryzen Threadripper processors. In the future there will only be Pro models, aimed at OEMs, professional use and companies. So no cheaper models appear in the Threadripper 5000 series.

The Threadripper platform will use a ‘common infrastructure’ in the future, writes AMD. The manufacturer clarifies that this means there is one line of Threadripper Pro processors, running on one socket with one chipset. AMD says this is to simplify the range of Threadripper processors and ensure that they all support the same features. The Threadripper Pro CPUs run on the WRX80 platform with support for 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and eight-channel Udimm and Rdimm support.

The WRX80 platform is mainly aimed at companies and OEMs that build workstations. However, there will also be consumer motherboards and “some of them” will support overclocking of the processor and memory, according to AMD.

In March, AMD announced the Threadripper Pro 5000WX series, with models from 12 to 64 cores based on the Zen 3 architecture. At the time, only a Lenovo ThinkStation P620 workstation was announced in which the processors became available. AMD now reports that Dell will also use the processors in its Precision 7865 workstation. As of July, the 5000WX processors would be “available worldwide” from “leading system builders.” The processors will also be released on the market later this year.

WRX80 motherboards are currently in the Pricewatch from 750 euros. Prices of the separate Threadripper Pro 5000WX processors are not yet known. The Threadripper Pro 3000WX models with 16, 32 and 64 cores were delivered last year for 999, 2299 and 4799 euros respectively.

With the previous Threadripper generations, AMD also offered versions without the Pro addition, aimed at prosumers. These were, for example, the Threadripper 3000X variants, which can be placed on TRX40 motherboards. These provide 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes and four memory channels. In addition, there were the Pro models in the 3000WX series on the WRX80 platform, with double the number of PCIe lanes and memory channels.
