Synology services Cloud Sync and Hyper Backup will no longer be able to access Amazon Drive from November 1. Until then, the services can be used to save data from Synology NAS to Drive, then users need to use Amazon apps or browser.

Amazon has emailed all users of the two Synology services. That mail has been published on Reddit. In the message, Amazon does not explain why Synology access will be blocked as of November 1. Amazon recommends users to download certain apps such as Amazon Photos and Amazon Cloud Drive, so that files from the user are uploaded to the storage service even after November 1.

Users of the Synology services should now check whether their Drive files are encrypted or whether files are stored in a special file format. When files are indeed encrypted, according to the service, they should be saved ‘in a different format’. Encrypted files currently on Amazon Drive must be downloaded, decrypted with a Synology tool, and then uploaded to Amazon Drive, according to Synology. Synology emphasizes that the files will remain on Amazon Drive, but that they will no longer be accessible from the Synology devices.

Cloud Sync and Hyper Backup are two Synology services that make it possible to back up data stored on a NAS to a storage service. Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft Azure, among others, are supported via the service. Synology will give users limited by Amazon’s decision free use of Synology’s proprietary C2 Backup service until March 31.
