Amazon is going to lay off 9,000 employees. CEO Andy Jassy confirms this on Monday. It is the tech and retail giant’s second recent round of layoffs. The company already laid off 18,000 employees in January.

According to Jassy the cuts mainly affect employees of AWS, the PXT team, Amazon’s advertising division and Twitch, the live streaming platform that Amazon owns. The CEO says Amazon has hired a significant number of new employees in recent years, but the company wants to reduce costs due to economic uncertainties. The layoffs are part of that. The dismissed employees receive a severance payment, a transitional arrangement for health insurance and external support in finding a new job.

Amazon already did a round of layoffs at the beginning of this year. The company then cut 18,000 jobs. The second round of layoffs follows as more of the company’s teams have completed their analysis for the coming period. However, the teams involved are not yet done making final decisions about exactly which features will be affected, Amazon says. This must be done by the end of April at the latest. Affected employees will then be informed.

Several tech giants have made rounds of layoffs in recent months because of the declining economy. Facebook parent company Meta did two rounds of 11,000 and 10,000 employees respectively. Microsoft also laid off thousands of employees in January. Google owner Alphabet also cut 12,000 jobs in January.
