Facebook director Mark Zuckerberg will explain to the European Parliament behind closed doors how Facebook handles user data. Zuckerberg has accepted an invitation from Parliament.

The President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, tweets that Zuckerberg may be coming as early as next week. This will take place in a hearing with, among others, the leaders of various parties from the European Parliament and the rapporteur of the Committee on Civil Liberties. The hearing will be behind closed doors, the AD reports.

It is the first time that Zuckerberg appears before a parliament outside his home country of the United States. The Facebook founder appeared in his own country before a Senate committee and the House of Representatives. Zuckerberg said no to the British Parliament, the country Cambridge Analytica came from. Cambridge Analytica used the Facebook data of up to 90 million users to target advertisements for political campaigns. Cambridge Analytica has since gone bankrupt as a result of the scandal.

The European Parliament wants an explanation from Zuckerberg about how Facebook handles user data. In addition, parliament will discuss how other countries could interfere in member state elections through fake news on Facebook. The hearing may take place as early as next week, although an exact date has not yet been set.
