Xiaomi is working on an Android TV upgrade for the four-year-old Mi Box. Beta program participants have already received the upgrade. It is not yet known when other users of the Mi Box will get the upgrade to Android Pie.

The upgrade appears from a Reddit post by user Askmetech, which shows a screenshot of the update process. The update does not state which changes have been made. User cipher-zer0 says there are no major changes as of yet, just that the Android settings menu has changed. According to Android Authority, Android TV 9 works better on low-end devices than version number 8, the setup process is simplified, and the operating system can handle Autofill passwords.

It is therefore not clear when the Android upgrade will come to regular users. Xiaomi first showed the media player in 2016. At that time the device was still shipped with Android 6 Marshmallow. Later, the media player was upgraded to Android 8 Oreo. The Xiaomi Mi Box was on sale via the Pricewatch for 94 euros until last March.

The Xiaomi Mi Box was the first Android product that Xiaomi officially sold outside of Asia. The Mi Box has a soc with four Cortex A53 cores and a Mali 450 GPU, 2GB memory and 8GB storage. The media player can show 4k images at 60fps. The device can handle HDR, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS.
