WhatsApp is working on a feature to let users choose whether to upload with the best quality or least data usage. This is evident from a beta version of the Android variant of WhatsApp.

The choice for the upload quality of videos comes in the settings menu of WhatsApp under Data and Storage, according to a screenshot from WABetaInfo. There are three options there, namely Auto, Best Quality and Data Saver. With Auto, the software itself chooses, while with Best Quality it is always about the highest quality. With Data Saver, WhatsApp tries to compress the video as much as possible.

The feature is in version 2.21.14.6, which WhatsApp is distributing through its beta program on Android. WhatsApp is much more likely to test new and unannounced features through the test versions of its app, after which they are available in the stable version of the chat app at a later date. This usually happens a few weeks to months later.
