WhatsApp may be working on option to use account on more devices

New indications have emerged that WhatsApp is working on the ability to use an account on different phones. New text in the beta indicates that users could activate their account on up to four devices.

The new option was discovered by WhatsAppBeta in the most recent Android beta. In version 2.20.196.8 the menu option for WhatsApp Web has been replaced by ‘linked devices’. Users who click through will also see a different screen than before. The menu to use WhatsApp Web has changed to a more generic ui that allows users to ‘link a new device’. It is striking that WhatsApp specifically mentions the Facebook Portal.

In itself, the new menu in the beta doesn’t say much, but combined with previous betas, it appears that WhatsApp makes it possible to use the service on several devices at the same time. Then, for example, the text changed as soon as a user activated a new device. WhatsAppBeta now writes that it concerns a maximum of four devices on which WhatsApp can be used. That’s less than what is allowed with WhatsApp Web.

For the time being, nothing is officially known about the feature. WhatsApp itself has not said anything about it either. So it is not clear how the new function should work. Perhaps this is the same as with WhatsApp Web, where one device must be the main device and establish a link with another device. That way, WhatsApp can guarantee that the end-to-end encryption of the service will continue to work.
