WhatsApp beta lets users chat with unsaved numbers

In WhatsApp’s beta version, users can start a chat by pressing a phone number without having saved that number. That phone number must be linked to a WhatsApp account.

WABetaInfo notes that in WhatsApp’s beta version 2.22.8.11, it is possible to press phone numbers sent in instant messages, with a pop-up menu appearing. In that menu, users can choose to save the number, call the number, or chat with that number. The latter is only possible if the number is already used on WhatsApp.

In the current stable version, when pressing a phone number, the user goes to the calling app and no menu appears. It is possible to chat with phone numbers without saving them, but this requires external websites or apps.

It is not known when the feature will come to the stable version of WhatsApp. The chat app creators are working on several new features for the app, such as a revamped camera interface, additional voice messaging features, and larger file sharing.
