With a proxy, WhatsApp users can already set up a medium between their device and Meta’s servers, for example to circumvent a government blockade. The new settings allow users to independently set the port used for media and chat files. For example, servers or proxy server providers may have certain restrictions and having separate addresses for chat data and media can also avoid these restrictions. according to WABetaInfo.

The website also reports that an option is being tested for additional Transport Layer Security. This protects data between the user and the proxy provider with encryption. WhatsApp also offers standard end-to-end encryption for chats. Finally, the chat service is said to be testing a sharing feature in the beta version that will allow users to share their proxy settings in full.
