Volvo is reportedly planning to unveil an all-electric-powered XC40 this year. This relatively compact SUV is likely to be Volvo’s first all-electric car to hit the road, followed by the Polestar 2 car from Volvo subsidiary Polestar.

The website Automotive News Europe reports that Volvo told them at an event that the all-electric XC40 will be unveiled before the end of this year. It is planned that the car will be delivered from 2020 and can be seen on the road. When exactly the electric XC40 will be unveiled and when it will be delivered is still unknown.

This move to release the XC40 in an all-electric version with batteries is quite important for Volvo, as the manufacturer has previously stated that fully electric cars should account for half of global car sales by 2025. That equates to more than a million electric cars. The company says on its website that it wants to have five new fully electric battery cars ready by 2021.

The recently presented Polestar 2 car is also due to be delivered to customers in 2020. Both the Polestar 2 and the electric XC40 would use the Compact Modular Architecture, a platform that Volvo has developed together with the Chinese Geely and already forms the basis of the XC40 released in 2017. There will also be two hybrid variants of the XC40.
