Volkswagen has opened pre-orders for the ID.3. The electric hatchback is the first car based on the MEB platform and will be released in mid-2020. There will be three versions, the middle version with 58 kWh battery costs ‘less than 40,000 euros’.

Volkswagen still shows the ID.3 with camouflage; the car will be fully unveiled in September and the final specifications will then be announced. Interested parties can already order by making a deposit of one thousand euros. Free cancellation is possible.

Only the middle model with a 58 kWh battery can be ordered and the final price is not yet known. However, Volkswagen says that this version will cost less than 40,000 euros. There will also be variants with 45 and 77 kWh batteries, which will become cheaper and more expensive.

According to the wltp standard, the maximum theoretical range of the 58 kWh model is 420 kilometers. For the models with a smaller and larger battery, this is 330 and 550 kilometers. With all models, Volkswagen says to provide six years of free maintenance and an eight-year warranty on the battery.

Production of the ID.3 will start at the end of this year. Pre-orders can now be made in 29 countries. Volkswagen wants to build 100,000 ID models per year in Zwickau, Germany. Later that should increase to 300,000 ID cars per year. This also applies to other models, not just the ID.3.

The Volkswagen ID.3 is the first car to be made on the MEB platform, many more models are to follow. Volkswagen is positioning the ID.3 as a mid-range model, there will be even cheaper ID models and more expensive ones. The group has already shown several prototypes of ID cars.
