Nintendo Switch users are increasingly reporting that their accounts may have been hacked. The way in which the accounts are hacked is still unknown. The accounts obtained would then be used to purchase in-game items.

Users report the account hijackings on Reddit, among others, Twitter and a thread on game forum ResetEra. They report that their accounts have been accessed from unknown locations. The account hijacks seem to have started in mid-March and a new wave of accounts is said to have been hit this weekend, ZDNet reports.

Hackers would mainly use the Nintendo accounts to purchase in-game items using linked payment methods. Especially bundles of V-Bucks for Fortnite are often mentioned. It is unclear exactly how the accounts were hacked. For example, it is unknown whether hackers try usernames and passwords from data leaks at other services. Some users report Moreover that they used unique passwords for their Nintendo accounts, but were still hacked.

Nintendo has since confirmed to Eurogamer and VideoGamesChronicle that it is “actively investigating” accounts to which “unauthorized access” has been obtained. A few weeks ago, the company same message on his Japanese Twitter account. Nintendo also calls on users to turn on two-factor authentication. Users can do so through Nintendo’s Accounts website. In addition, it may be wise to unlink payment methods such as PayPal.
