The American start-up Framework has announced a 13.5″ laptop that is modular and should be easy to repair. The laptop uses expansion cards to enable multiple USB ports, for example, or a lot of storage. A price is not yet known .

Frameworks laptop has room for four expansion cards. Each card has room for one port, such as a USB-C or USB-A port, or an HDMI port. It appears that these Expansion Ports connect to the laptop via USB-C. Users can also purchase a 250GB or 1TB storage expansion card. Framework does not mention prices for these cards yet. The company does say it wants to release more cards in the future and to open up the design to other developers and users.

Practically all parts of the laptop can be exchanged and replaced, including the screen, the 55Wh battery, the keyboard and the motherboard. In this way, Framework wants to make it possible for users to buy a new motherboard with a new CPU, for example. Parts get QR codes that lead to a guide or the store page.

When the laptop ships this summer, it will have an Intel i5-1135G7, i7-1165G7 or i7-1185G7 processor. The laptop then has a maximum of 64GB DDR4 memory and up to 4TB NVME SSD. The 13.5″ screen has a resolution of 2256×1504 pixels, shows one hundred percent of the sRGB color spectrum and has a maximum brightness of more than 400cd/m2. The laptop has a 1080p webcam above the screen with sliders on either side for the microphone or turn off the camera.

The housing is made of aluminum and is a maximum of 15.85 mm thick. With four expansion cards installed, the device weighs less than 1.3 kilograms. The keyboard keys have a travel of 1.5mm. Users can purchase the laptop assembled or as a kit. The laptop comes standard with Windows 10 Home or Pro. Framework says that after the laptop it also wants to sell products from other categories.
