Twitter takes over maker Android app Cover

Twitter has acquired the very young Cover, known for the Android app for adjusting lockscreens, for an undisclosed amount. The app builder announced this on Monday.

Cover has only been around since October last year, but the company is said to fit well with Twitter’s current strategy. “Like Cover, Twitter believes in the incredible potential of Android,” Cover writes. “They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter – more user-friendly and more contextual. And together we will make that happen.”

Cover was founded, among others, by Gmail product leader Todd Jackson, who released the news about the acquisition on Monday. With Cover, which is only available for Android, it is possible to go directly from the lockscreen to one of the most used applications, which vary by location. For example, someone at work sees different apps than in the car or at home.

It is not yet clear what exactly Twitter wants with Cover. The microblogging service has not yet mentioned anything about the acquisition. According to the founders of Cover, the company will help Twitter make “something better” than the lockscreen app. Presumably this is something that should strengthen Twitter’s position on mobile devices. Despite the acquisition, Cover will remain available in Google Play for the time being.
