Twitter has disabled the ability to tweet via SMS. According to the social network, there are vulnerabilities that allow third parties to post tweets on users’ accounts in this way. Twitter says providers should fix those vulnerabilities.

Twitter says turn off the SMS feature to protect accounts. At the end of last week, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s account was hacked. The social network said it was due to poor security at a mobile operator, which allowed the attackers to access the CEO’s phone number. The tweets were posted via Twitter’s SMS feature.

Although Twitter has now turned off the SMS feature, it will soon be back in countries where users depend on it. In other countries, the function is not available and Twitter is thinking about a long-term solution. Also, Twitter notes that it now relies on phone numbers for two-factor authentication, but the company wants to “improve” that. Twitter may be working on support for other authentication methods.
